Miami Beach
Miami Beach is a brash child of many different faces undergoing many changes over the year since its inception. Essentially, Miami Beach, Florida, is an island running parallel from Biscayne Bay to the eastern edge of Miami. It is part of Miami/Dade County.
It began its existence in 1915 a child of Collins, Lummus and Carl Fisher three different developers determined to make a city happen in the area. A causeway, coinciding with the land boom, rose in 1920 to connect the island with the mainland. This causeway, the County Causeway gained a new name after World War II. It became the MacArthur Causeway.
In the 1930s and 1940s, things changed. Art Deco or Art Moderne took over as an architectural expression. As the area deteriorated and Art Deco became passé elderly accommodation grew up along South Collins Avenue, Ocean Drive and points west of the Bay area. This was Miami Beach pre the construction and renovation boom.
In the 1980s and 1990s, two things happened to reverse the trend. Intensified investment capital created a downtown skyline that began to soar above the lower heights of the city. In the South Beach part of Miami Beach, a reconsideration of the art deco movement inspired hoteliers, in the early 1980s to rebuild and renovate their buildings. The result was South Beach in Miami Beach arose like a Phoenix to re-embrace the world.
