Hobe Sound
Hobe Sound, South East Florida, is near the north end of Jupiter’s Island. At its rear door is the Treasure Coast, at its front door, the Gold Coast. Nearby Jupiter Island acts and has acted as a major influence. Wealthy winter residents from Jupiter Island used to arrive by train to make commercial transactions. Jupiter Island and Hobe Sound have since moved on, but this early relationship established ties between the two communities.
The community of Hobe Sound is an unincorporated village founded by Europeans by 1699. Jonathan Dickinson was forced to land there when the British ship he was on, the Reformation, sank off its coast. Attempts to learn the name of the area resulted in the name of Hobe. The area definitely bore the name Hobe Sound by the year 1699.
In 1815, a Spanish government land grant gave the land, including nearby Jupiter Island to Don Eusebio. He promptly began to sell it off in parcels. Joseph Delespine bought a large section at one-dollar per acre. The land did not develop quickly until the early 1900s when the railroad made its appearance along the coast of Florida. The result was tourism, industries and employment for the area and surrounding.
In one mad decade, the Roaring Twenties, Hobe Sound became part of the general insanity. A company, Olympia Improvement Corporation, decided to turn Hobe Sound into one vast motion picture lot. Even the name Hobe sound was to change, briefly, to “Picture City.” The boom crashed and a hurricane roared through the town, ripping up streets and rending buildings. Today, the only vestige of this aspect of Hobe Sound echoes in certain street names.
