Haulover Beach

Haulover Beach is on Collins Avenue not far from Fort Lauderdale. It is a two-mile expanse of seashore free from hotels and other clutter. It is a major recreational area offering golden chestnut-colored sands, the frothy waters of the Atlantic surf and access to grass and rolling sand dunes. Haulover Beach consistently makes the “Top Ten Beaches List” of the Travel Channels. There is also a small jetty for fishing and boat launching. In fact, Haulover Beach would not exist if it were not for its use as a launch point for boats.

Haulover Beach, Florida, derives its name from the 1900s. Residents did not have immediate access to smooth highways, launches and jettys. Locals had to haul their boats over the swampland ringing round the area of Haulover Beach Park to reach the water. The name as Baker’s Haulover tells a tale. It appears on maps in 1823. Baker, a fisherman, would haul through the dunes to the ocean his sponge boat over from Biscayne Bay. In other words, Baker and these individuals had to “haulover”, their boats. Today, technology, road structures and urban encroachment means easy access to the beachfront. The old days are long gone. The name, Haulover Beach remains, however, to remind visitors of the times past.

The Haulover Beach, Fl., jetty is a place to catch grunt, mackerel, snapper and yellowtail. You can also book a deep-sea charter to take you out into the ocean for some deep-sea fishing. There are boat rentals and you can also rent kites or even play tennis or volleyball. There is a hiking trail. Yet, these are not the only attractions on the beach.

Haulover Beach in Florida has a clothing-optional area. This sometime controversial beach is restricted to the north side of the beach. In July, the United States holds National Nude Week. The major festivities occur at Haulover. It attracts individuals from Miami Beach for a day trip. In fact, there is not a Haulover Beach hotel. You have to go to hotels near Haulover Beach. Once such hotel is the nearby American Beach Resort.
