Amelia Island

Amelia Island is one of many barrier islands off the north east coast. Amelia Island, Florida, however, is unique in its character and history. Of all the places in the United States, Amelia Island is the only one to have flown under the flags of eight different countries. Its nickname is, in fact, Island of the Eight Flags. Amelia Island has seen the French, the Spanish and the English off of its shores. It has harbored sea pirates and robber barons. It has been the home of so-called barbarous adventurers and of civilized society. It is and island that has lived its life fully.

Amelia Island lies between the American River and Intercoastal Waterway to its east and the Atlantic Ocean to its west. It is the font of many a beach. Along its 13.5 miles of beachfront are the Amelia Island Beach, the Amelia Island Plantation, American Beach, American City Beach and Fernandina Beach. In its southernmost sections, the sand is fine, solidly packed. It is hard not to find a beach on Amelia Island. An Amelia Island real estate agent can help you find the ideal home so you can step out almost right onto the beach.

Amelia Island rentals come in various types. There are resorts, hotels and condominiums. Do not expect, however, to find towering buildings. Amelia Island condos, Amelia Island resorts and Amelia Island hotels are low-level buildings. This is in keeping with the historic nature of the island. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, is a case in point. Although it features 444 guestrooms, it spreads its pseudo-southern look over its three-mile location and does not extend overbearingly upwards into the heavens.

The same is true of Amelia Island oceanfront condos. The few that exist on the island are low slung to the ground, hugging the coastline and the land. The real estate ads tend to describe them not as condos but as villas. Amelia waterfront homes are no different. In style, they adopt the character of the island.

The Amelia Island Plantation is a resort adopting the same pattern of development. Its 1,350 acres features hotel rooms and villas. The large complex has its own convenience store, bars, specialty shops and restaurants. The grounds of Amelia Island Plantation, Florida, have their own beach, forbidden to locals and non-guests. This Amelia Island resort also has its own golf courses. There are, in fact, five Amelia Island golf courses. You can find out more about Amelia Island Plantation real estate availability through a local agent or at the Plantation web site.
